German luxury cars are known for their good looks and top-notch performance. With their classic luxury and high-powered engines, the BMW 2 Series and Mercedes-Benz A-Class check both those boxes, but which one is right for you?

To help drivers in Chattanooga, Hixson, and Cleveland, TN decide, BMW of Chattanooga looked at how they stack up to each other in this 2021 BMW 2 Series vs. Mercedes-Benz A-Class comparison.

BMW 2 Series vs Mercedes-Benz A-Class: Style & Options

With its iconic kidney grille and streamlined design, the BMW 2 Series continues the Bavarian brand's tradition of luxury. It also gives you options. The 2 Series features a sporty compact car, an agile coupe, and a classic convertible.

All three options offer leather upholstery, a traditional leather-wrapped steering wheel, power-adjustable seats, and high-tech touchscreens in the dashboard. Once you sync your smartphone to the system with Apple CarPlay® or Android Auto™, you'll be able to kick back and relax and stream your music while you drive.

The Mercedes-Benz A-Class also offers leather upholstery, power-adjustable seats, and an infotainment system with smartphone compatibility. The exterior feels familiar with its famous 3-pointed star logo, but it doesn't offer as many options. The A-Class is only available as a compact sedan.

BMW 2 Series vs Mercedes-Benz A-Class: Performance

The 2021 BMW 2 Series is designed to make every drive feel like you're flying down the Autobahn. The sedan starts things off with a TwinPower turbo 2.0L 4-cylinder engine that gets up to 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque.

Just as there are a couple different styles to choose from, the BMW 2 Series also offers a different drive, depending on which model you're interested in. For example, the sedan offers another 2.0L 4-cylinder engine that gets up to 331 lb-ft of torque. Both the coupe and convertible can offer even more exciting drives with a TwinPower turbo 3.0L V6 that gets up to 335 horsepower and 368 lb-ft of torque.

Whichever 2 Series you're interested in, you can count on it to offer agile handling and grip the road in any conditions. All three models offer xDrive all-wheel drive and come with Dynamic Traction Control.

You'll also find all-wheel drive offered on the Mercedes-Benz A-Class. It even gives you a couple engines to choose from, but they're not quite as performance-inspired as the BMW's. For example, the base powertrain is also a 2.0L 4-cylinder, but it can only get up to 188 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque. An enhanced version is also available, but it still falls short of the BMW, with only 288 lb-ft of torque.

BMW 2 Series vs Mercedes-Benz A-Class: Safety

No matter how good a car looks, your safety should always be top priority, and high-quality safety systems should be the most important aspects to look for in a vehicle. That's why the 2021 BMW 2 Series comes with an Active Driving Assistant. This system includes smart safety features that can help prevent accidents, such as:

  • Frontal Collision Warning
  • Active Blind Spot Detection
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Speed Limit Info

The 2 Series also includes impact sensors that can help you after a collision, too. They'll automatically unlock the doors, disable the fuel pump, and turn on the hazard lights after an accident.

You'll find several of the same driver-assistive features available in the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, but you won't find any kind of intelligent post-collision system.

Test Drive a Sporty German Car

From giving you more options to offering more power under the hood, it's clear that the BMW 2 Series is the superior German car for drivers in Chattanooga, Hixson, and Cleveland, TN.
