What's New for the 2020 BMW X1?

The 2020 model year finds the BMW X1—BMW’s subcompact crossover SUV offering—close to the end of its second production cycle. To keep pace with other BMW vehicles, the X1 now has a broader kidney grille. Also, an 8.8-inch infotainment screen is now standard, replacing the 6.5-inch display of previous years; and there have been a few interior trim enhancements. Two models are available; they are the all-wheel-drive xDrive28i and front-wheel-drive sDrive28i. Powering both is a 2.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline 4-cylinder engine with 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, as well as an auto start-stop function to boost fuel efficiency by eliminating idling. Notably, the 0-60 mph time of the sDrive28i is 6.6 seconds, which surpasses the xDrive28i’s 6.3 seconds. The engine is 8-speed automatic transmission.

The 2020 BMW X1 has two rows of vinyl seats to accommodate up to five people. The front row—which faces a leather-wrapped steering wheel—includes 8-way power adjustability, with a memory system on the driver’s side. Other standard comfort and convenience features include iDrive infotainment integration with the previously mentioned 8.8-inch touchscreen, navigation, dynamic cruise control, real-time traffic information, HD Radio, Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free phone calling and audio streaming, voice control, seven-speaker audio, AM/FM radio, automatic climate control, vehicle and crucial memory, a USB port for connecting mobile devices, Apple CarPlay for smartphone integration, BMW Remote Services (for functions such as stolen vehicle recovery and remote door lock/unlock), and BMW TeleServices as a health check on the vehicle. For restraint and cushioning in the event of a crash, the 2020 X1 provides dual front impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, front seat-mounted side-impact airbags, and roof-mounted side curtain airbags. Driver-assistance tech includes daytime pedestrian protection, frontal collision warning with city collision mitigation, lane departure warning, and automatic high beams, and there’s BMW Assist eCall for 24/7 emergency assistance. Other standard safety and security features on the X1 include a rearview camera with front and rear sensors, programmable LED daytime running lights, coded driveway protection, dynamic stability and brake control, a four-wheel anti-lock disc braking system, and an anti-theft alarm system.
