What is front-wheel drive vs. rear-wheel drive?

There’s nothing better than feeling a car’s power under the pedal, but what makes your car move the way it does? For one, your drivetrain is responsible for the power shift in your vehicle from the transmission to the wheels. In front-wheel drive (FWD) vehicles, the power shifts to the front wheels to pull your car forward on the road. You don’t feel this because it happens instantaneously, but in cars with bad transmissions, the car may lurch forward if it’s not working properly.

Rear-wheel drive vehicles mainly include muscle cars and sports vehicles. This is because all the power is transferred to the rear differential, which allows the car to push forward. This action creates more horsepower and better handling overall. Newer vehicles typically have an all-wheel drive instead of FWD or RWD though. This is because AWD vehicles can have custom configurations for more fuel efficiency or horsepower depending on the configuration you select.
