BMW Unveils the First M5 with AWD, and an Off-Switch For RWD Purists

There’s a sweet spot between “controlled” and “wild” when it comes to super sedans like the 2018 BMW M5. Too much control takes the edge off the fun, while too little makes it harder to manage. That was the aim of the Bavarian automaker’s M-division engineers when it came to building the sixth-gen model, which is the first to feature standard xDrive all-wheel drive.

The M5 has also gotten a power bump to 600 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque, good for a sprint to sixty just 3.2 seconds long. Purists may take BMW M to task over the all-wheel drive system, but don’t fret too hard. They’ve added controls that let you step down the front wheel’s participation until the car is entirely RWD driven. From there, it’s up to the M Sport Differential to shunt power between the back wheels to keep the car in check. Overall, early tests have indicated the M5 is more refined, but not without losing its willingness to play hard.
